Christmas is the season of food, food and more food. And while that’s all great, come NYE our specially bought outfits may just end up being a little bit snug.
Our 25 tips for keeping healthy at Christmas will give you a few ideas to make the month just that little bit less sinful.
Gingerbread houses and mint hot chocolates are all good.
But if you want to treat your body as well as your tastebuds, try and swap out some of the heavier Christmas snacks for something lighter.
If you opt for something more nutritious, not only will it keep your tummy a bit happier, but can give you more energy for all those late December nights. Win.
Try out some of these healthy snack swaps.
HEALTHY SNACK ALTERNATIVES:
WANT: CHEESY NACHOS
SWAP: POPCORN WITH NUTRITIONAL YEAST
Avoid fat-laden nachos and opt for microwave popcorn topped with nutritional yeast. A serving of nutritional yeast (like Marigold Engevita Nutritional Yeast Flakes, Holland & Barrett, £2.35) is a great source of protein and is heavy on the fatigue-fighting vitamin B12. And the cheesy flavour will be a treat for your tastebuds, too.
WANT: SHOP-BOUGHT GINGERBREAD
SWAP: HOMEMADE GINGERBREAD
Swap out flour for ground almonds, and sugar for dates or date syrup, for a healthy twist on this classic festive treat.
WANT: A TERRY’S CHOCOLATE ORANGE
SWAP: RAW CHOCOLATE AND ORANGE POT
Christmas is Christmas without a Terry’s Chocolate Orange. But if you’re trying to avoid too much sugar, try making this Raw Chocolate and Orange Pot for your chocolate orange fix. It’s just as good as.
WANT: MINT HOT CHOCOLATE
SWAP: HOT ALMOND CACAO
Rather than grabbing a hot chocolate from outside or stirring a minty powder into milk, heat some almond milk with cacao and date syrup. Pop in a spoon of nut butter to make it a bit creamier, and a splash of mint flavouring for festive vibes. Lower sugar, happier tummy.
WANT: CANDY CANES
SWAP CINNAMON SUGAR PRETZEL CANDY CANES
Seeing those classic red and white sweets on the shelves is a Christmas must, but they’re not the healthiest treat to munch on. Whip up these Cinnamon Sugar Pretzel Canes as a healthy snack alternative.
WANT: YULE LOG
SWAP:YHEALTHY CHOCOLATE CAKE
Christmas afternoon always has us reaching for this festive staple when your sweet tooth kicks in, but if you want more nutrients in your chocolate fix, pop on your baking hat and make this Healthy Chocolate Cake. The coconut, cacao and agave are kinder to your tummy than the sugar, cream and chocolate of a classic yule log.
